Besides AI, I also enjoy poetry (some poems I published in the poetry journal "Reduccions" #58, #62-63) , jazz (playing a Bösendorfer Grand piano during ECML'07 in Warsaw), good wines from my favorite wine shop, skiing, and in-line roller-skating (see a short video roller-skating downhill at nearly 50km/hour and some photos of my first participation at the 2009 100+ Km ultramarathon in-line roller skating within and around Barcelona, a video of my second participation in this epic event in 2011, and another video of my participation in 2012. I did also compete in several rollers' marathons and at the 24 hours du Mans Rollers in 2008 with the team TarracoPatina finishing in position 200 out of more than 650 teams from all over the world)

See some pictures I took in India during my trip to attend IJCAI-07

Very interesting stories!

Say NO to scientific research with military purposes

Say YES to Robust and Beneficial Artificial Intelligence Research

"The world needs to wake up from its long nightmare of religious beliefs. Anything that we scientists can do to weaken the hold of religion should be done and may in the end be our greatest contribution to civilization" (Steven Weinberg, American physicist, Nobel laureate in Physics)

"The God Delusion" a book by Richard Dawkins that everyone should read!

Ramon Lopez de Mantaras is Research Professor of the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) and Director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute of the CSIC.

Born in Sant Vicenç de Castellet (Barcelona).

From october 1979 to september 1980 Research Engineer at IKERLAN Research Center in Mondragón. From october 1980 to december 1981 Assistant, and then, from january 1982 to december 1985, Associate Professor (Tenured in january 1985) at the Computer Science Department of the Technical University of Catalonia. From january to june 1986 Visiting Professor at the University of Paris VI (Pierre et Marie Curie). From june 1986 to january 1989 Tenured Research Scientist at the CSIC and Research Full Professor since february 1989. Adjunct Professor at the University of Technology Sydney since january 2014. Vice-Chancellor's Distinguishsed Visiting Professor at the University of Technology Sydney in March 2014.

To the best of my knowledge, my 1977 PhD thesis was the first work that develped a computational approach to the problem of learning to discriminate between solid objects by means of tactile recognition using an anthropomorphic artificial hand (known as "Belgrado's hand", built at Mihailo Pupin Institute). In 1979-1980, while working for IKERLAN, I developed the first expert system (for designing electrical power transformers) in Spain and one of the earliest expert systems in Europe.

Presently working in Case-Based Reasoning, Object-based Place Recognition and Localization for Autonomous Robots , Team Playing Behavior in Robot Soccer based on CBR (take a look at some videos: two robots passing the ball, no goalie, two robots against one goalie), and on CBR & Music (check out and listen to a couple of examples on the automatic synthesis of expressive jazz ballads performed by our system called SaxEx: EXAMPLE 1: compare the inexpressive input and the resulting computer-generated expressive performance of the famous "Autumn Leaves" ballad. EXAMPLE 2: listen to the resulting computer-generated joyful and sad versions of "All of Me" and compare them to the inexpressive input. SaxEx has been featured in the New Scientist's paper: "Bird lives - Charlie Parker could soon be playing in your living room".

Involved in over 50 research grants since 1983 (19 internationally funded), IP in 31 (16 internationally funded) of them amounting to more than 10 milion Euros.

Several of my former PhD students are now internationally known AI scientists: Three of them, Enric Plaza, Carles Sierra, and Pedro Meseguer are ECCAI Fellows. See my 140 "scientific descendants" at "The Mathematics Genealogy Project".
