Welcome to the Artificial Intelligence Research Centre (IIIA) from the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC). IIIA was created in 1994 as an offspring of a small group that initiated its research activites in 1985. In 1994 we moved from the Advanced Studies Research Centre (CEAB) in the beautiful sea town of Blanes to a modern and elegant building in the campus of UAB.
We have grown along the last 25 years to become a cohesive group of 60 researchers and engineers, currently including 20 PhD students. We have expertise in many areas of Artificial Intelligence, including machine learning, knowledge representation, multiagent systems, agreement technologies, natural language processing, reasoning, optimisation, and semantics. Many of our near 100 alumni hold relevant research and industrial positions all over the world, in Australia, US, France, UK, Singapore, Italy, and Argentina to name a few.
We have led over a hundred research projects on fundamental aspects of AI and on applying our theoretical results to many different domains like education, health, or manufacturing. IIIA is also an active player in the Catalan industrial ecosystem, participating in a large number of technology transfer projects.
We are proud to be an international referent in AI with more than 3000 publications since 1985 and to contribute to the AI community by serving in many scientific management positions. These include editorial boards (JAAMAS, AIJ, JAIR, Fuzzy Sets and Systems), scientific boards (IFAAMAS, IJCAI Board of trustees), and conference organisation committees (IJCAI-2007, -2011, -2017, AAMAS-2004, -2009).
