The Spanish National Research Council (CSIC) took part in the R7+ meeting held this week in Ottawa, a forum that brings together research and evaluation agencies from the G7 countries, with Spain and the European Union invited as additional participants. The meeting focused on the strategic use of artificial intelligence in scientific research and on the shared challenges and opportunities that AI presents for public research systems.
The CSIC delegation was led by its President, Eloísa del Pino, accompanied by Carles Sierra, Director of the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA-CSIC). Sierra contributed to the expert discussions, which examined how AI can strengthen scientific practice across disciplines and how public institutions can guide its responsible and effective integration into research.
Throughout the sessions, the R7+ members underlined the need for coordinated strategies to ensure that AI contributes to scientific rigour, transparency and societal benefit. Discussions addressed data governance, trustworthy infrastructures, responsible deployment of AI tools, and the importance of maintaining human expertise at the centre of scientific work.
The participation of CSIC was noted for reinforcing Spain’s commitment to advancing an international research agenda in which AI serves as a reliable and sustainable instrument for discovery. Carles Sierra emphasised the importance of developing AI approaches that support scientific integrity and strengthen collaboration across domains and countries.
The IIIA-CSIC continues to play an active role in shaping global reflections on the use of AI in science, contributing expertise that helps position Spain within the leading international conversations on the future of research.
