Exploring Immersive VR and AI-Supported Learning in English Language Education

This presentation traces the evolution of my research on immersive technologies in English language education, from the initial integration of virtual reality (VR) into language learning to the emerging possibilities created by artificial intelligence (AI). I will first introduce studies examining how immersive VR environments can support English communication, reduce language anxiety, and provide learners with meaningful opportunities for interaction. I will then discuss the growing role of AI in VR-based language learning, particularly through AI-powered conversational agents and avatars that can provide learners with more flexible and personalized speaking practice. Building on these studies, I will explore future possibilities for developing AI-supported immersive applications for language learning, including platforms designed for speaking practice and intercultural exchange. The presentation will conclude by considering how the combination of immersive VR, generative AI, and human interaction may create new forms of language learning environments and support authentic communication across linguistic and cultural boundaries.
