Ismel was born in Puerta de Golpe, Pinar del Río in the far west of Cuba on July 3rd 1975. Like many Cuban children, Ismel attended boarding school until being accepted at the University of Havana where he graduated with a Bachelor's degree in Computer Science. He wrote his thesis on Genetic Algorithms at the Institute on Cybernetics, Mathematics and Physics. Upon graduation, Ismel was employed as an internal software developer at the Cuban Ministry of Justice. Ismel was awarded a doctoral scholarship in Artificial Intelligence from the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) in 2002. On June, 2007, Ismel presented his PhD thesis through the Polytechnic University of Catalonia in Distributed Constraint Satisfaction. His thesis advisor was Dr. Pedro Meseguer.

At the moment, Ismel is working in UDT-IA as R&D software engineer for BuscaMedia. His tasks are two: implement a case-based reasoning (CBR) system for the automatic generation of narratives and assess the quality of generated narratives according to the 7 criteria proposed by Weyhrauch. This proyect mainly focuses on two domains related with sport events: football and F1.

Ismel is also involved in Finixer, a sports-related start-up.
