The Technology Development Unit in Artificial Intelligence (UDT-IA in the spanish acronym) springs in September 2002 as a services unit for the Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA), belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), and its location is the Autonomous University of Barcelona's Campus (UAB).
Today, UDT-IA has twelve people, mostly engineers, and the managed incomes volume in 2010 has been over €500,000.
Its goal is the technology transfer from the IIIA-CSIC's research results to the society. It promote and manage the collaboration with innovative companies and organizations taking an interest in incorporate it on their production process.
In its application and technology transfer task of all those works the UDT-IA uses the next key competences:
- Accessibility to vanguard researchers in artificial intelligence techniques.
- Artificial intelligence applicability to a huge fan of problems.
- Strong knowledges in new technologies.
- Fast development and prototyping of applications.
- Continuous learning.
UDT-IA in the IIIA
UDT-IA is integrated in the prestigious Artificial Intelligence Research Institute (IIIA) belonging to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC).
IIIA's main goal is to be among the first groups around the world in Artificial Intelligence research on those areas in which it is working.
To accomplish this objective the IIIA-CSIC carries out a high qualified research in Artificial Intelligence, maintaining a good balance among the basic research and the applications, and a special emphasis on the Phd students' formation and the technology transfer.
The present centre researching lines are mainly based on:
- Learning Systems.
- Multiagent Systems.
- Logic and Reasoning.

UDT-IA in the CSIC
UDT-IA belongs to the IIIA and this one belongs to the Spanish National Research Council (CSIC), dependent body of the Spanish Government's Ministerio de Ciencia e Innovación (Cience and Innovation Ministry). CSIC is the main spanish public research organization and a foremost of them in Europe, comprising the main knowledge fields.
Organizes its content in eight scientific-technician areas:
- Humanities & social sciences.
- Biology & biomedicine.
- Natural resources.
- Farming sciences.
- Science & physics technologies.
- Science & chemical technologies.
- Science & material technologies.
- Science & food technologies.
Among the main purposes that CSIC develops, we can detail:
- Scientific research and multidiscipline technical character.
- Scientific and technical advising.
- Result transfer to business sector.
- Contribution to create technological based companies.
- Specialized personnel formation.
- Infrastructure and huge installations management.
- Culture of science promotion.

UDT-IA member of TECNIO
In the year 2005, UDT-IA joined the Centers Network to Technological Innovation Support, XarxaIT, wich depends on CIDEM agency at the Autonomous Government of Catalonia (Spain). This happens in recognition of his labor of technological public supplier and his excellence in R+D applied supported on a management and quality system based on the 9001 ISO norm.
After the fusion of CIDEM and COPCA and the creation of the new Catalonian Agency of Innovation and Internationalization, ACC1Ó, in 2009 a new structure is created, TECNIO, that joins all the previous networks of technological actors of Catalonia, including the XarxaIT.
The main objective of this network is to offer to the Catalonian businesses an only winodw to give them services to improve their competitiveness and internationalization. Belonging to TECNIO, permits to the UDT-IA to be in a privilege position in the chain of technology transfer between the basic investigation and the innovation, extending its presence to all the diferent poles of the R + D + i.

UDT-IA member of the Parc de Recerca de la UAB (Research Park of the UAB)
The IIIA-CSIC belongs to the Parc de Recerca UAB (PRUAB), an organization founded by UAB, CSIC and IRTA, whose aim is to stimulate and improve technology and knowledge transfer activities of its members, to promote entrepreneurship activity through new technology-based companies and, in general, to provide interaction between research and industry.
Nowadays, the PRUAB has 25 research centers and institutes who work in these fields:
- Environmental sciences
- Human and Social sciences
- Biomedicine and Biotechnology
- Animal Health and Food Technology
- Experimental sciences
The Parc offers more than 1600 for new business incubation, supported by an efficient structure for the creation of spin-off companies. In 2009, when the new building (EUREKA I) is completed, the PRUAB will offer an additional 5.000 m2 for new research and innovation activities in collaboration with business.
