In the 1990's two american lawyers observed that in certain cases the vote of a jury can be dealt with in two different ways that look equally reasonable but can lead to opposed verdicts. The common aspects between this problem and another one that is usually considered in social choice theory have led us to a general method that always produces consistent results. Its application to another field leads to the well-known “single-link” method of cluster analysis (and to interesting variations of it).
